Davide Battistin has a complete familiarity with the full range of Venetian motifs, which permits him to explore familiar and less well-known scenes in strikingly original ways. Although the settings represented are freighted with associations, historic and personal, the towers and domes are less relevant in these images than the moods created by the tangible presence of light. Generally this is achieved through the physical textures of the paint, but elsewhere the manifestation of light somehow hovers weightlessly on the canvas.
